The Chetham Society was founded in Manchester in 1843 for the purpose of publishing “Remains, Historical & Literary connected with the Palatine Counties of Lancashire and Cheshire”.

Since the 1870s the Society has concentrated on the historical aspects of these counties. The Society has been publishing books for over 150 years and has produced over 260 volumes in 3 series: the First (Old) series, the Second (New) series and the Third series. Volumes have always been well-produced and handsomely bound.
